Postdoc in the field of polymer nano-composites

Empa-Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology

Scientist working with microscope in sterile lab environment, wearing protective gear and a mask.

We are passionate about materials science and technology. Empa’s approximately 1,100 employees contribute significantly to societal well-being through cutting-edge research, ensuring a worthwhile future. Empa is a research institution within the ETH Domain.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to join our Cellulose & Wood Materials Laboratory for a postdoctoral position (80%-100%) in stimuli-responsive, multi-functional polymer nanocomposites.

Project Overview

Multiple capabilities, including as selective curing, self-healing, and debonding, can be integrated into traditional polymer materials and activated by external stimuli as needed. This study seeks to create such stimuli-responsive, multi-functional epoxies by integrating a variety of nano- and microparticles. These materials have a wide range of applications, particularly in the building and transportation industries, and promote circularity. This study is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) through the Spark 2024 award, which encourages unique and innovative ideas.

Your tasks

As a postdoc, you will create stimuli-responsive epoxy nanocomposites with diverse functions. Your responsibilities extend beyond fundamental research to project management, which includes organizing interdisciplinary teams and managing timeframes. Your duties will also include scientific publications and continual growth, making this role exciting and influential.

Your Profile

We are looking for a highly determined, creative, self-sufficient, and communicative individual capable of bridging the gap between materials science, chemistry, and laser physics. You have a Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, or a similar discipline, with a strong focus on epoxy formulations and nanocomposites. You should have extensive expertise dispersing nanoparticles in polymers, imaging techniques (SEM and TEM), and material characterisation (DSC, DMA, UV-vis spectrometer, FTIR, rheometer). While an interest in fiber-reinforced polymeric composite manufacture and mechanical characterisation is desirable, it is not a prerequisite. We demand a track record of high-quality scientific publications, as well as strong English communication and writing skills. Proficiency in German is beneficial.

We offer

Join our top research center in the Zurich area to work on cellulose and wood products with a vibrant, worldwide team of experts. Empa offers exceptional infrastructure and a multidisciplinary work environment that fosters collaboration and creativity. As a team member, you will have access to a wide range of professional development, networking, and cooperation opportunities with industry professionals. The first contract is for one year, with the possibility of an extension beginning in March 2025 or upon agreement.

We live in a culture that values inclusiveness and respect. We welcome everyone who is interested in innovative, sustainable, and meaningful activities; that is what matters.

How to Apply

We look forward to receiving your entire online application, including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact information for two references. Please submit them strictly through our employment portal. Applications submitted via email or post will not be accepted.
